Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU), formerly known as Kota Open University, is renamed by Gazette notification by Government of Rajasthan on 21st September 2002. It came into existence in 1987. The main idea of setting up an Open University in Rajasthan has its roots in examinations of UGC Committee under Chairmanship of Late Prof. G. Rama Reddy. He observed that the distance education system in Rajasthan is well recognized and has the prospective to be a full-fledged Open University.” The founding of VMOU (Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University) happened with the merger of two institutes offering correspondences courses, College of Correspondence Studies, Udaipur and Institute of Correspondence Studies and Continuing Education, Jaipur with the intention of support and attains appropriate coordination between the spread distance education sources and to provide a consistent high quality education to the people of Rajasthan.
