The IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) is the national university having headquarters at New Delhi. It’s named after the ex- Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. The university was recognized in the year1985 with the budget of Rs. 2000 crore. The motto of IGNOU is "The People's University". IGNOU is world’s largest university with over 3,500,000 students. It was reported to education through distance learning and offers higher education opportunities predominantly to underprivileged society segments, to promote, organize and place standards for distance education in India as well as strengthens Indian human resources through education. Except for teaching, research and academic activities, it also works as national resource centre to support and maintain the distance education’s standards in India. The IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) is now dependable for introducing as well as promoting distance education and for coordinating, maintaining and determining standards in the country.
In the year 1989, IGNOU’s first Convocation was organized. Over 1,000 students had graduated and awarded with their diplomas. In the year 1990, IGNOU had first broadcasted its audio-video courses through television and radio. In 1992, the University Grants Commission had given full recognition; equivalent to country’s other universities. In the year 1999, IGNOU initiated India’s first virtual campus, starting with offering Information and Computer Sciences courses through Internet.
IGNOU currently has around 3.8 million students across India as well as 40 other countries like Afghanistan, Bahrain, China, Ethiopia, Ethiopia, Fiji, France, Gambia, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mongolia, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, UAE, UK, Vietnam, and West Indies.
IGNOU has the network of 21 schools, 2600 study centres, 7 sub-regional centres, 59 regional centres, and 52 overseas centres. Around 20% of the students enrolled for higher education are enrolled to IGNOU. IGNOU provides 175 academic programs covering 1100 courses of degree, diploma and certificate levels.
