In the 2nd century Chola, family at Kanchipurram by Tondaiman Ilam Tiraiyan ruled the capital province. It is believed that Tondaiman was subdued by Kurumbas and took over Chola family completely. 
After Illam the Chola Prince Ilam Killi ruled the region. Chola dominance was put to an end by Andhra incursions under the king Pulumayi II.  They appointed a ruler to look after Kancheepuram region. Bappaswami is considered the first ruler Pallava to rule Kancheepuram region.
